Refrigerated Trailer Repair FAQS

How long does a refrigerated trailer last?

The life expectancy of an average refrigerated trailer will depend significantly on not only the type of reefer unit but the maintenance habits of the operator and other factors. One common school of thought is that a reefer trailer should be able to provide an average of 40,000 hours or about 8 years on the road based on between 4,000 and 5,000 hours of use annually. The lifespan can be lengthened significantly by keeping usage below 4,000 hours each year.

How often should you service a reefer unit?

Periodic maintenance will be needed at various intervals to keep a reefer unit in good operating condition. For belt-driven units, inspections should be performed every 750 hours and service should be performed every 1,500 hours or once per year. If the unit also has an oil filter, that should be changed every 3,000 hours or two years. Conventional units should be inspected at 750 hours, with service at 1,500 hours, then inspection again 750 hours later, maintenance at 3,000 hours, and so on.

How do you maintain a reefer trailer?

There is a lot of maintenance that goes into keeping a reefer trailer running well. You’ll need to do daily checks of the oil and coolant, and visual checks for any leaking fluids. Belts need to be tight and any unusual noises should be checked out. Each time the unit is started, it should go through a basic functionality check and the display will let you know if there are any error conditions.

How much does it cost to replace a reefer unit?

In most cases, a replacement reefer unit will cost between $20,000 and $26,000 by the time it has been installed. The replacement price is one of the biggest reasons to be sure that operators take care to keep their reefer units well-maintained, thoroughly inspected, and in good repair.

How often should you change the oil in a reefer trailer?

You should change the oil in a reefer trailer every 4,000 hours or every two years on newer units, with a filter change about every 1,500 hours between.
