Gear Service & Rebuilds FAQS
How long do transmission rebuilds last?
A rebuilt transmission should last for a significantly longer time than any repair to the transmission. The average lifespan of a rebuilt transmission is an additional 150,000 to 200,000 miles when taken care of properly. Regular maintenance is required to have a rebuilt transmission last more than 100,000 miles.
What is involved in a gearbox rebuild?
Rebuilding a transmission or gearbox is an incredibly difficult process. The gearbox is removed entirely from the vehicle and all hard parts are inspected for wear and damage, being replaced as needed. All of the parts classified as “soft”, such as seals, bands, and clutches, are replaced. Rebuilding a transmission requires someone specially trained to do so.
Is it worth rebuilding a transmission?
The biggest advantage to rebuilding a transmission is the cost. The transmission can be rebuilt for much less than a brand new transmission can be obtained. It is a great option for the short term, when you may not want to add a new monthly payment to your budget for another year or two at least. Even if the rebuild cost you more than a thousand dollars, it will still be a more economical way to maintain transportation than getting a new vehicle.
How much does it cost to rebuild a gearbox?
The cost of rebuilding your transmission will depend heavily on what is involved in the particular transmission for your vehicle. On the low end, a rebuild may cost $1,000 to $1,500, while more expensive rebuilds can cost more than $3,000.
Is it cheaper to have a transmission rebuilt or replaced?
In almost all cases, it will be cheaper to rebuild a transmission than to completely replace it. This will also depend heavily on the specific costs for your make and model but, generally speaking, a rebuild will cost nearly half the price of a new one, sometimes even less.
