Lube, Oil, & Filter Changes FAQS

How often do trucks need oil changes?

The oil change schedule is much different for personal or light-duty vehicles than it is for large, commercial, or heavy-duty trucks. For light-duty vehicles, the oil should be changed about every 5,000 miles. For heavy-duty trucks like semis, the oil will have a functional life expectancy of 10,000 to 25,000 miles.

Some factors can affect the oil life while on the road. Going through mountainous terrain, for example, is much harder on the engine and, as a result, the oil. Also, driving in hotter climates for longer periods will break the oil down quicker and require a more frequent oil change schedule.

How often should I change my oil filter?

How often you should change your oil filter has a spectrum of answers. Some prefer to change the filter every other oil change, and others prefer to change the filter with every oil change. Neither one is incorrect and the right choice for you depends on your personal risk tolerance and driving habits.

Many oil filter manufacturers recommend changing the filter out every other oil change. In theory, if you are getting your oil changed on schedule, it won’t have a chance to become dirty enough between changes to pose a clogging hazard. If you have an older vehicle or have more time between oil changes, you may want to consider a new filter with each oil change.

How much is an oil filter change?

How much your oil filter change costs will depend greatly on where you go to have it done. Dealerships will be the most expensive locations to have an oil and filter change done, followed by individual mechanics, then chain lube shops. The cheapest option is to buy the oil and the filter and make the change yourself.

For a personal vehicle, the average oil and filter change will be between $30 and $60, with the cost of the oil and filter included in the price. An oil filter change for a semi-truck will probably run between $80 and $160. Keep in mind that in most cases, you cannot change the filter without changing the oil as well.
